Althea vail Wallop

My work revolves around how humans interact with, learn from, and create intelligent technology. I explore answers to questions such as, "What makes humans different from machines?" through various media, including academic research, philosophy, art, yoga, software development, and inclusive design. I hope the lifelong exploration of these topics can lead to innovative solutions wherein technology can enhance health outcomes.

I’m always open to new collaborations! Feel free to reach out.

My story

  • I’m currently a graduate student at the ATLAS Institute of CU Boulder.

My research interests center on how we can use the creative technological modalities such as XR, algorithmically-generated music, and personalized therapeutics to facilitate improved physical rehabilitation outcomes. I’m currently focused on individuals with movement disorders due to neurodegenerative conditions.

Furthermore, I’m interested in how these applications could improve mental health, especially in those with terminal conditions.

  • I studied in the Symbolic Systems program at Stanford University where I specialized in Learning.

It's an interdisciplinary major combining the core philosophies of Computer Science, Psychology, Philosophy, and Linguistics. Within this program, I chose to concentrate on learning because I aim to understand how humans interact with and learn from technology as well as the ways we can build technology to augment the human experience.

I received my B.S. in 2014 with a 3.83/4.0 GPA and a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.

I’m currently pursuing my M.S. at CU Boulder in Creative Technology and Design with an emphasis in Social Impact.

  • I was raised on a cattle ranch in rural Montana before earning a full-ride scholarship to Stanford University at the age of 16.

During my time as an undergraduate, I rode on the Stanford Equestrian Team, was a residential crisis counselor, and studied French. I sang opera in Paris under Jorge Chaminé after 12 years of classical singing education with Grammy-award winning soprano Karen Clift.

After graduating from Stanford in 2014, I spent the majority of the next 6 years working in the Silicon Valley tech sector as a Product Manager.

In that timeframe, I also earned my yoga teacher training certification from Kripalu.

Sometime along the way, I took solo trips across New Zealand, Iceland, Chile, Brazil, and most of Europe. I worked on projects in Berlin, Amsterdam, Honolulu, and Paris. Photos you see across my site were taken throughout these excursions.

  • Check out my Portfoilo page for details on my projects and working methods.

Until Summer 2022, I was Director of Product at Loris.ai and responsible for all product strategy, design and development on the founding team.

As a freelancer I currently work as Growth Lead at Ascend’s Leadership Program for women, among other projects.
